INTRODUCTION

Choosing a web design sometimes can be tedious if you don’t have the right resources or you simply don’t know how. First off you need to differentiate what theme you’re going to have. Is it going to be for personal use or for business.

Of course you don’t want to put stuff about the stock market on your personal site or Sponge Bob square pants on your business site. The layout, image, navigation and the overall look and feel should be appropriate to what your trying to accomplish. I remember when I first built my web site

Man! It looked really bad and every time I looked at it it gave me a headache. It took a lot of tweaking before it finally looked decent.

One thing I noticed though was that people liked a good web design with quality content and easy navigation.

These two factors are very important (Good Web Design + Quality Content) you need to balance your site where your visitors get comfortable using your site.

Below are some of the guidelines I followed while building my website:

LOOK AND FEEL - First impressions count! Now if your site is ugly people might not even read your content and could just simply click the back button or close the window. It’s like what I said, you need to balance your site with quality content and good graphics. Avoid using duplicate web sites or templates that everybody has. Keep your site unique, clean and don’t include too much advertising.

GRAPHICS AND COLORS - OK! folks this is very important! Many webmasters fail on this one. Your graphics should relate to your subject. If your talking about power tools in your topic you can’t just use a bunch of purse and shoe images right?

What you want to do is find an image of power tools or an image that relates to your topic and put it on right or left hand side of your content. Now using colors is very important too, but be very careful on this one. Personally I would only used two or three combinations of colors and it needs to match the overall look and feel.

Let’s say that your website’s company logo or your top image is blue. You might want to stick with the colors that will match your overall look and feel. You can use red arrows or red check mark images as your bullet points and use light gray on your main navigation image.

This is just an example, of course, use your own judgment. You could also use a third eye. You might want to ask your mother-in-law to take a look at your site. Oh! boy…Well that’s a different story…

What I’m trying to say is if you use multiple colors your web site will end up looking like a clown. Just imagine your self wearing a red blazer, purple pants, green tie, polka dots socks and blue shoes. Everything would be off right? Not a good sight. Also you’ll want to avoid using bright or loud colors that might hurt your visitors eyes or could even give them a migraine.

CLEAN LAYOUT DESIGN - The background of your web site is also a big part of your overall layout. As you may notice most big companies on the internet use white backgrounds. Google, Yahoo, and eBay these companies are multi-Billion Dollars companies and they all use white backgrounds and there’s a reason for that.

White backgrounds are pretty standard in web design, because it’s clear, clean and easy to read. Make sure you check your site for browser compatibility like Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Netscape, Opera and so on..

EASY NAVIGATION - Navigation links on your site play a big role in determining the main menu of your site. You should keep your main menu together as much as possible so that your visitors know what the next page will contain..

Many well known web sites on the internet keep their major links so that they appear on the top navigation bar. They are all in related section links and are listed on the right hand side menu. Make sure that your site has footers (links at the bottom of your site) so your visitors can easily go back up or go to the next page for other related links.

MINIMUM LOAD TIME - Make sure your web site load time is minimum considering many people are still using dial-up (especially outside the US). By minimizing your graphics, flash, video, and MP3 it will help your site to load faster. If necessary use some kind of compression software.

CONTENT IS KING - You’ve probably heard this over and over again but it’s true. Good content attracts visitors and your visitors will come back again and again. After all, the internet is all about INFORMATION, INFORMATION, INFORMATION.

As search engine marketers, we spend an enormous amount of time trying to get targeted traffic to our site. But, once those visitors get to our site, can they find what they’re looking for? If not, guess what? We’ve lost a customer.

Think about it this way. How many times have you found a site through a major search engine or directory, only to visit the site and not be able to find what you’re looking for anywhere on the site? What do you do next? You go back to the search engine and click on the next site. That site has lost a customer: you.

Helping your visitors find what they’re looking for on your site can cover a great many areas, such as navigation, user interface issues, and the lack of a clear “call to action.”

But one way around many of those issues is to offer an onsite search engine, so that once visitors hit your site, they can easily find exactly what they’re looking for.

The really neat thing about onsite search engines is that many of them are FREE. Yes, you read right: free. Of course, that also means that you may have ads in your search results, which may or may not present problems for you. However, even if you choose to purchase an onsite engine, the cost is generally not expensive.

What should you look for in an onsite search engine?

  • Good customer support. If you begin to have problems with the engine, you want to be able to get help in fixing it.

  • Reports that let you know what people are searching for once they reach your site. Just think of the GOLD this will tell you! If you don’t have a page that covers a particular topic, make one!

  • Ease in setting up the engine. This may or may not be an issue to you, but if you’re like me, you want something that is simple to set up and maintain.

  • An extensive “help” section at the site that will walk you through setting up the engine and answer any questions you might have.

  • The ability to keep the engine out of certain areas of your site that you don’t want spidered and available through the search, such as employee areas, password-protected member areas, etc.

  • The ability to spider password-protected areas so that your member areas can have their own onsite search.

  • The ability to customize search results pages.

  • The capability to request re-indexing whenever you update the site, or even to schedule re-indexing on a regular basis.

In my training material and resource library at the Academy, I had an onsite search engine for a long time. Then, the company folded. Until recently, I hadn’t set up another onsite engine, because the one onsite engine that I really wanted to use didn’t index password-protected areas. So, I “patiently” waited for the onsite engine, FreeFind, to add this to their list of features. Like any area of business your website needs some effort from you if its going to be successful. You’d be foolish to just build any old website and hope it works. Yet this approach, or rather lack of approach, is still widespread on the internet. Businesses still dont seem to understand what the internet can do to benefit them and their customers. They just dont get it.

This is not a new criticism, people have been saying it for years. Notice i used the word people, because thats exactly who suffers. You, me and the millions of people like us who are visiting those sites during our virtual travels. Many of these businesses do actually have great products and services to offer us, its just that they havent put the effort in to find out what we, their customers want. They havent bothered to find out about us, about our needs, about our wishes. They have other more pressing priorities it seems. So they just present them to us any old way and hope we dont notice or are too stupid to notice. Dont they understand they are losing sales, customers, repeat customers, referrals and more?

Whether your business has a whole team working on your website or just you, its going to take some effort and commitment to get to a point where your website is satisfying your customers. A website where you have a direct conversation with your visiting potential customers. A conversation where they feel you are talking directly to them. A conversation where they feel you understand them. You understand their needs and wishes like no other business has done before. In short, a place where you connect with your customers and they connect with you. A place where you are entirely focused on them, NOT on you. Of course, they will want to know what your product does and some key information about how it works, etc. But present it to them so that they know instantly and precisely how they benefit from it: How much money they will save with it. How much time they will save with it. How it will make their life better. How it will make their life easier, etc.

Focusing wholeheartedly on your customers is not easy, it takes time, motivation, commitment and innovation. Which i suspect is ultimately why it doesnt always get done. Dont let this happen to your site. Do it well and you will see the results. But be sure about it, you’ve got to take on the responsibility to do as much as you possibly can if you want to see those golden results. Ensure your customers visit is a positive one that will stay fresh in their mind for some time.

How can you tell how well your site is doing? Answer the following questions to get an indication:

  • Do you regularly promote your website to carefully targeted customers?

  • Do you know exactly how your customers benefit from your website?

  • Are you getting the sales figures and incomes you want?

  • Are you getting new customers regularly?

  • Do you get regular positive customer feedback?

  • Do you get regular positive website feedback?

  • Can you describe your customer and their needs and wants easily?

  • Are you regularly looking at ways to improve your site and products for your customers?

  • Does the text on your site speak to an individual person?

  • Is it easy to contact you via the site?

Generally, the more questions you answered yes to, the more successful your website can be. You should of course aim for 90-100% (9-10 yes’s). Lower than 90% (9 yes’s) indicates that you need to improve.

One of the great things about the internet, unlike other more traditional media, is its ability to be updated immediately. You can change anything on your website at anytime and as often as you like. Use it to experiment with offers and products. Experiment with the way you present them to find out what works and what doesnt. Use this great feature to improve your site for the better. Better for your customer that is.

Tips:

  1. Listen to your customers.

  2. Dont be too precious about your site content and products.

  3. Dont become too attached to anything on your site. Change or remove it if it doesnt work.

  4. Ask for honest feedback.

  5. See the bigger picture.
