How Long Do You Spend Grinding?

Posted by admin on 17 Feb 2010 | Tagged as: Fun Links, Lady Luck's Lair, Playing Games

Online grinders are faced with a series of big decisions. One of the biggest is to know how much of your life to devote to this online poker variety. Some grinders take the perspective that online poker is their full time job. This means that it should take forty hours a week, every single week of the year. They try to be at their computer at a decent hour in the morning, take regular breaks; basically they function exactly the same way that they would if they were working in an office. Other people tend to take a profit based approach. They argue that because you can earn more at online poker than your average nine to five job, there is no need to grind on a regular schedule. These people just grind whenever they feel like it. The problem, of course, with this lack of structure is that it does not really take the game seriously. Online poker grinding is a serious business. I would strongly suggest that you avoid this kind of loose approach to the game and really dedicate some time to the process. A poker online grinder should be spending at least eight hours a day playing poker. Anything less and you are not really a grinder.

Your Opponent’s Breathing

Posted by admin on 13 Jan 2010 | Tagged as: Fun Links, Lady Luck's Lair, Playing Games

There are so many things to study in your poker online opponent. The body is a full on indicator of what is going through the brain. The more you can pick up on physically from a person in their method, the more you will know about what is behind their cards. This is a secret to playing outside the numbers and the math.

In particular, a online poker player’s breathing is a huge indicator of how he’s feeling. How the chest moves, the cheeks, the rhythm of the veins in the neck, whether the mouth is open or closed. The shape of the nostrils and the air. When a player is breathing hard he is excited, adrenaline is moving.

Often, when a player’s body is active, this means they are bluffing. This is not always the case, but if they are nervous, there is something at stakes. With bigger hands, the hands will shake too, but there is also, in more refined players, a resolve that only might shake when they have nothing. A big hand often allows confidence. Etc.

Studying these kinds of reads with the pattern of your opponent prior plays can add a lot of context to your major decisions, and in the end result in your getting paid at the casino online.

Dark Decision

Texas Hold ‘Em poker online players use different strategies to confuse and deceive their opponents at the table. A somewhat puzzling tactic has become more popular lately, and may seem strange to those with less experience playing poker. The player who is first to act post-flop declares “check dark” before the first online poker card materializes on board. What is “checking in the dark” and what purpose does it serve? The online poker player who is first to act after the flop is on the spot to reveal information before any other players do.. Being first to act can be risky since the flop can bring anything. By “checking in the dark” the player has eliminated the burden of revealing anything about the hand, be it good or bad. Often it’s the small blind if that player called the big blind to remain in the hand. If the action had been raised pre-flop, then whoever remains left to the button is first to act. Checking in the dark is basically a passive/aggressive technique. It foists the onus of having to make a move onto the players betting behind the checker. It is useful in both heads-up play and multi-player rounds. When a player checks in the dark, there is no way to determine the strength of that hidden hand, and the checker has postponed making a decision. Checking in the dark is a way to disguise a hand, and reserve the right to act later in the betting rather than being first.

Poker on TV: Poker after Dark

Posted by admin on 09 Jun 2009 | Tagged as: Fun Links, Lady Luck's Lair, Playing Games

Among the gamut of online poker shows on television, it takes a show with a unique format to stand out among the crowd. ‘Poker After Dark’ is successful in this way, in that it is the only show that operates on a nightly broadcast structure, showing a single 6-seated casino online tournament over five one hour broadcasts from Monday to Friday, with a winner take all format. This allows them to have an ever changing roster of players and a more varied array of play, instead of longer formatted shows that play out over a long time.

The betting structure of ‘Poker After Dark’ is also nice in that the blinds do not escalate so quickly that it becomes a rat race among theonline poker players (such as would often happen on the Poker Superstars series). There are large enough stacks and enough time in blind periods that there is a decent amount of play at each level. Also nice is their recent addition of the Poker After Dark cash game, which is essentially modeled after the High Stakes Poker model, and features many of the same players from the regular season of events, including players like Phil Hellmuth, Tom Dwan, Sam Farha, Doyle Brunson, Phil Laak, and many other of the game’s best.

Game Theory on Betting - Part Five of Five

Posted by admin on 16 Apr 2009 | Tagged as: Fun Links, Lady Luck's Lair, Playing Games

In our last few poker articles we introduced you to the ideas and mathematics behind casino Game Theory, and used it to determine bluffing frequency (which is one of the skills few players have and can eloquently describe how they use it). In this final article regarding Game Theory, we’re going to look at how you can use it to nullify the advantage an opponent can grab over you if you have a set betting pattern.

Simply put, game theory can be used against those “reading” players that are good at putting you on hands, not so much at online poker. The ones who always seem to fold to your monsters and extract the maximum from you when they know they have you beat.

You have two choices here, you could start playing bad poker, become a calling station and/or playing passively and watch your money dwindle away and even start getting out played by players not as good as you, or you could use some Game Theory and apply it to your betting strings.

If you flop top two and usually always bet a certain amount, flip it up a little bit and double that bet once, then on the next hand, simply check it, and on the next hand bet it like you normally would. If you’re a fan of the check-raise on the turn, simply raise and reraise if you get raised sometimes. Remember, the whole idea behind the theory is that there will be incomplete information, and that patterns can be developed and analyzed due to frequency. So just as you can determine how often you should bet on a bluff, you can also determine how often you can bet on a made hand. It always becomes an attempt to continue to cover up your tracks. Consider Game Theory as a way to hide your intent.

But let me say this, as one final note, if you know you can out play a player, you probably won’t have to rely on Game Theory as much as you would when you’re playing against stronger players. If a player doesn’t know that there are certain opening hands that deserve a raise and that others deserve an immediate fold, then by all means just play “correct” ABC style poker and use the exploitation instead. Think of Game Theory as your shield, not your sword on the felt.

Berating Poker Players

Posted by admin on 28 Jan 2009 | Tagged as: Fun Links, Lady Luck's Lair, Playing Games

Poker is a game of personalities, and a game of intense competition. In this environment, it isn’t hard to imagine that a good amount of hostility can manifest between players while large sums of money exchange hands. Whether you engage in verbal fisticuffs or fly under the radar is irrelevant as long as you understand the consequences your actions have on the game. Intentionally inducing table hostility can be a winning strategy for some players, while diffusing antagonism may work for others. Knowing what kind of role you can most effectively play at the table and acting based on this assumption will ultimately yield strong positive results in the long run.

Berating other players at the table can be intimidating, and may result in a verbally aggressive player to be able to push other players around with his chips more effectively. Conversely, this type of verbal sparring can result in loose calls against the abrasive player in an attempt to bust him. Knowing how one’s abuse affects their opponents is crucial in using table hostilities as a tool rather than just a sideshow attraction. A controversial player who uses berating successfully is Phil Hellmuth. In his poker game, he discourages players to look him up with inferior hands in fear of being accosted, and tries to always show down strong hands so that he can run effective bluffs. In the event that a bluff goes wrong, He is a constant center of attention and lightning rod for controversy, and has parlayed this into a marketable persona.

On the other hand, being amicable and polite can be equally as effective in deterring potential bluff calls, and could potentially prolong your stay at the table by decreasing your visibility and allowing you to stay out of conflict, thereby decreasing your variance. Players like Barry Greenstein and Doyle Brunson advocate this type of table demeanor, as it is paramount to the concepts of cooperative game theory to which the subscribe.

Whether you want to be loud and obnoxious or quiet and reserved, be sure to know the results of your actions and take into account the way they affect your game. By doing this, you can use your personality traits to your advantage at the poker table.
