Botulinum therapy (abbreviated to BoTox) is swiftly becoming a must amongst Sydney’s stylish crowd in fact it is becoming an essential part of a beauty routine for a lot of individuals in Sydney. But I am often astonished when I hear the various half truths which surround this treatment. To follow are a few of the more mistakes which I encounter all the time at Star Cosmetic Medicine, where I practise as a physician.
Myth Number 1: I may not be able to use my facial muscles normally!
The human face has 60 or so muscles. These ordinarily function harmoniously, however from continued movement lines may form. When excessive BoTox has been injected the muscular structure responsible for facial expression may become less taut. The quantity injected by virtually all physicians make you look ‘refreshed’, but still you will maintain your facial expression.
By employing a carefully calculated quantity of the wrinkle injection in precisely the right tissues facial expression is kept whilst any fine lines undergo a softening effect.

Myth Number 2: BoTox is toxic!
Actually there is a grain of truth in this. Botulinum Toxin Type A is the exact medical nomenclature. An overdose may end up in loss of muscle tone and can cause sickness.
But to put everything into perspective: an old pharmacist’s saying is that ‘everything is poisonous - all depending on the dose’. A large dose of any drug can bring on sickness. If you drink too great a quantity of water you will die.
Myth Number 3: BoTox will sting!
The hypodermic needles we use at Star Cosmetic Medicine have a diameter less than a human hair. A lot of individuals say that the shots are not as sore as getting bit by a mosquito. Definitely not as sore as having a regular shot.
Myth Number 4: My face will be numb!
Untrue. BoTox targets the neuromuscular junction, not sensate nerve fibers. Only the ability to relax your muscles is affected by BoTox injections.
Myth Number 5. Once you begin BoTox you have to continue or you might wrinkle faster than ever!
Once Again this is simply incorrect.
BoTox is expected to last for in the region of three months. Any further injections after the initial one should be effective for a little longer. The wrinkles will eventually re-emerge as the muscle returns to normal. However they will definitely not be any more noticeable than previously.
Even if you never had BoTox ever again - those lines will probably be a little smoother than if you had never been treated. This, of course is mainly the case due to the fact you have given your skin a ‘wrinkle holiday’ whilst the treatment was working.
