“Nothing last forever but the Earth and sky.” - from Dust in the Wind by Kansas.
Google has spent the last year evolving from a search engine to a giant media corporation. At birth Google was worried about only one thing, search - and that focus is why it became so successful. As Google spreads out many are wondering, are they doing it too fast? Are they letting quality slip? As any company evolves it will make mistakes, but has Google lost sight of its goals?
Google gained large distribution when Yahoo switched to it to drive down Inktomi stock price, only later to buy Inktomi. Google then came to power stealing traffic from Yahoo by providing clean, relevant results, and good search tools for surfers and webmasters alike. Many estimate that Google controls in excess of 75% of the search market.
Microsoft is still working on its search engine. Yahoo recently acquired Overture and is working behind closed doors in much the same way as MSN is. LookSmart has not updated Wise Nut in a long time, is hated by a large portion of the internet community, and is soon set to loose most of its distribution. And Ask Jeeves (owner of Teoma) has its top results powered by Google AdWords. With Google powering Yahoo, AOL and many other sites Google lacks a clear competitor today.
Right now Google can take its huge lead and extend it, or let it slip. No system is perfect and there will always be complaints, but I have to wonder if Google has forgotten why or how it became such an icon.
Many people have reported their Google Toolbar has been failing to return PageRank 90% of the time. While the hysteria around PageRank is somewhat overrated, it would be more assuring if the feature worked often.
One of the biggest problems search engines face today is a lack of quality content on the web. Earlier this year Google introduced a program called AdSense which displays its pay per click AdWords ads on many mid sized web sites. AdSense was designed to help pay to produce better content sites. Soon after Google introduced AdSense they included a related searches link set underneath the ads which made webmasters angry. This technique was siphoning off traffic from websites back to Google with no payment of any kind. Quickly Google had to repeal this move.
Google has also signed its AdSense members to a gagging clause. Beyond that gagging clause many have complained about getting kicked out for reasons they could not even challenge. Then for these same members to see how much money Google had owed them up to that point they had to agree to another set of terms that prevented them from criticizing the AdSense program. But the ads get worse.
Google was in a race with Overture to be the first to provide broad matching on its search terms. Google got there first. The idea behind broad matching is that it will allow Google to sell more of its ad space by providing ads on similar terms that were not yet sold. Overture allows different bid prices on different levels of matching. Google sets a single price on the ads, and this causes a huge problem for those who do not know how to use the system.
First the broad matching ads are less relevant. The term broad indicates far reaching and is self explanatory to its end effect on relevancy - which is in the exact opposite direction of Google’s roots. This new type of broad matching matches many remotely close search phrases to those paid for by the advertiser. Couple near matching with the fact that ad sites and pages are scanned for relevancy (which is frequently inaccurate) and a big problem starts to come about with how to provide relevant ads on the syndicated results.
While many of the SEO experts know how to use negative keywords, tracking, and other advanced features, the smaller advertisers do not always have the resources or understanding to effectively use this new, more complex medium.
Now instead of rewarding businesses for hunting out the phrases that exactly match them (and thus providing higher quality search results), Google is rewarding the largest companies by allowing them to be lazy. Google is shooting itself in the foot by degrading relevancy for short term profits.
Large companies bid on generic cover all terms at prices where they loose money on every transaction until the competition goes under. Not only do these name brands enjoy higher click through rates (due to brand recognition), but those with stockpiles of cash can afford to burn through thousands without a blink. Many small sites can not, thus the sad state of internet media is that it is now consolidating much the same way as offline media is.
It gets even worse for the small website now though. These same ads which they are using may now appear on pages that sometimes do not even remotely fit the ads. I was looking at the GMT clock time zones to ensure my clock was set at the right time today (so I missed daylight saving time). The page which had the different time zones listed a few cities and a group of AdWords. Most of these AdWords were targeting Las Vegas (most likely the most expensive US city). Las Vegas was not even one of the cities mentioned on the list. Not a relevant ad set. Bad for all parties involved.
What is the result of this change to AdWords? Lower quality ads at a higher price. Nick Denton predicted that the expansion of these ads across the web (especially coupled with decreased relevancy) that users will start to ignore them. Much the same way as banners have faded, only a few years may be left before this advertising medium chips away and destroys itself.
What about the regular Google search results? At least they are strong, right? Sometimes they are rather week. Some clients have had search results dominated by the same sets of interlinking sites. Aiming to fight spam, Google is acknowledging this fact by incorporating a new major algorithmic change on the web live. My site went from #17 to #7 to not in the top 1000 websites for “search engine marketing”. While I still have customers that need work done on their sites, this sporadic re mixing is not refreshing in my mind, as well as in the minds of many of my customers.
I have already had concerned emails arrive from friends worried about loosing thousands of dollars a month as their top listing evaporated. All I can tell them is wait and see.
Much of what people have feared would happen to Google after it goes public has already happened. It is clear that competitive open source alternative search engines such as Nutch are not desired so much as required.

The movie, “Field of Dreams”, starring Kevin Costner and James Earl Jones, made this line famous: “If you build it, they will come.”
That idea worked great in the movie but it is a whole different ballpark when it comes to a web site or an email campaign.
The only way to attract traffic on the Internet is to PROMOTE. And the key to successful online promotion is to know HOW your traffic found you.
Why?
Because when you know HOW your traffic found you then you will know what is working for you so that you can not only maintain it, but also increase it.
With an email campaign, it is absolutely essential to code your mailings in order to discover which one is bringing you results.
The easiest way to do that is by the use of Auto-Responders.
There are a host of FREE Auto-Responder services that will allow you to acquire as many FREE responders as you need.
For a “List of FREE Auto-Responder Services”, send a blank email to our Auto-Responder at: mailto:freeautoresp@emailexchange.org
For example, you are promoting an ad service that pays you 50% commission. You run one ad in a newsletter, another is done via your signature in posting to a business list and still another ad is exposed via FFA Link submissions.
You can code your ads simply by calling them ad001, ad002, ad003.
When you receive a reply to ad001, you will know it came from the newsletter, ad002 will be a response to your signature and ad003 will be from your FFA Link submission.
Use whatever code is appropriate for you but the important thing to remember to code it and know to what it pertains.
If you have your own web site, your hosting provider might already provide you with the tools you need to track your traffic.
All you would need to do is access your log info and review which web pages are getting the traffic and study where the traffic is coming from to visit you.
If you do not have access to such info from you host provider, there are many good FREE online stat services you can use.
Here are just a few:
HitBox http://www.hitbox.com/
What does HitBox report? Traffic - Hourly, daily, monthly and annual statistics for page views and unique visitors Referrers - Learn what sites link to you and how much traffic they send, the search engines and keywords users search to find your site, and total traffic from bookmarks User paths - See how users navigate through your site User profiles - Find out the browsers, operating systems and screen settings that your audience uses and their language, country and domain. 100s of statistics
Extreme Tracking http://www.extreme-dm.com racking/
With the eXTReMe Tracker you get every advanced feature required to picture the visitors of your website. Conveniently arranged, numbers, percentages, stats, totals and averages. All the way up from simple counting your visitors until tracking the keywords they use to find you.
NedStat http://www.nedstat.com/
Nedstat Basic provides you with accurate answers to all the important questions about your visitors, like which part of the world or countries that they are from, on which days and at what times they hit your site and if you’re reaching a greater audience.
You may find that much of your traffic is coming to you from a search engine or directory like Yahoo, http://www.yahoo.com/ or Google, http://www.google.com/.
You may also be pleasantly surprised to discover that a web site with related traffic has linked your site and is now sending you new visitors daily.
It would be a good idea to contact the owner of that new traffic generator and let them know you appreciate the link and even offer to link back to them in return.
Once you know where your traffic is coming from to find you, it is important to maintain that flow of traffic and then try to find other sources that are similar.
Doing so will allow you to increase the visitors and leads you generate and hopefully, increase your overall sales.

If you are aimlessly buying Christmas presents for people with hopes that just one of those things will please them, then you need to read this article. It would be a great idea to get them a gift card and let them choose what they really want and then you can spend the rest of the day enjoying each others company.
Christmas gets more extravagant every year. Even though people always claim they’ll do it differently in the future, each Christmas it feels like you spend the holiday just cleaning and cramming stuff away. When we are gift buying for adults, do we really need to go bonkers? Kids get excited for gifts, but adults buy for themselves what they want to have most of the time.
The problem is that most people don’t know what everyone wants. The theory is that if you buy the person a lot of gifts, chances are they will like at least one of them. Do an online search to find the perfect gift for your loved one. Check with people who know what they want and need. Ask the person a few probing questions throughout the year so when gift time comes you will have something to go on. Hopefully this will deter you from spending your money on worthless trinkets and gadgets. There isn’t anything wrong with a gift card when ideas elude you. You can personalize these with a few home-baked cookies or ornaments, or with a personalized card that lets them know that you wanted them to have the last say about their gift. The gift of getting to spend time with family and friends is way greater than any gift can give you.
While gift cards may be considered a bit impersonal, it is better than getting that loved one a gift they do not need or like. When you cannot determine the perfect gift through any means, gift cards are the ideal solution. Most of the time people don’t know what they want, or won’t answer if they do. Don’t worry, you’ll find plenty of ways to keep this group happy. Here is a great site for some personalised gift ideas for everyone.

Is building a Human-Edited Fully “Democratic” Search Directory Possible?
The independent creators of the non-profit “BuildtheHive” (www.BuildtheHive.com) think so, and I think they’re on to something. Here’s why:
As a webmaster, I’ve long been frustrated by a certain human-edited directory (and you know who I mean) that has inexplicably refused entry of some of my clients, while accepting others without a second glance.
The problem (as I see it) is the same thing that makes these resource potentially great - human editors.
Let’s face it…for some people, the power of being an editor of their very own category in a major search directory is simply too much for their character. Many a webmaster (myself included) has complained of the abusiveness of some of the editors, both in the way they perform their duties, and (at times) how they interact with the public.
To be sure…being a volunteer editor can be a thankless job, with the number of “Spam” submissions (i.e. those outside the guidelines) far outweighing the legitimate ones.
What’s worse, and far more disturbing, are the “rogue” editors of certain categories that are abusing their “power” by adding their own commercial sites, and excluding their “competition”. Think that’s an isolated case? Think again. This writer found instances of this type of abuse in over 2 dozen different commercial categories. In fact, some editor’s were so blatant about it as to add dozens of “mirrors” of the same exact site, essentially “taking over” the category with their own content.
After essentially ignoring this abuse for years, the editors (in a nod to the fact that it DOES exist) independently setup an abuse reporting system for users. However, the fact that they need such a system (in my opinion) just exemplifies the weakness in the current system of human-edited directories. What about the abuse that goes un-reported? The fact that you even need a abuse-reporting system to me says that you’ve already lost the battle. To be truly fair, a volunteer directory editing system needs to be IMPOSSIBLE to abuse. Unfortunately, no such system currently exists.
But one IS being built, and it looks like it may just revolutionize the world of human-edited directories.
Using a proprietary “voting” system, BuildtheHive will be (according to it’s creators) a “directory built the democratic way”. No one single editor can add, delete, or change a submitted website. All submissions & changes are voted on by multiple editors with the decision as to whether a site “makes it in” based on a simple premise of “majority rules”. This removes the ability of a single editor to deny ANY site, as it takes several editors to either approve or deny a site.
This democratic system has even been extended to the acceptance/denial of new editors. Anyone will be able to apply to become a BuildtheHive editor. Once submitted, an editor’s application is voted on, and acceptance/rejection is once again determined by majority rule.
The BuildtheHive creators have even solved the “expired domain” problem (i.e. sites that remain in a directory after being picked-up by domain speculators after their previous owners failed to renew the domain with their registrar) . Any site that gets accepted is automatically placed in a queue to be re-reviewed (and voted on again) after a specified period of time. This cool feature not only cures the expired domain problem, but it also eliminates the need for a category editor to manually monitor all the sites in their category (a HUGE plus for editor’s of very large categories).
At this point, if you’re like me, you’re saying to yourself “Why didn’t I think of that!”
The good news is, you can still be a part of it.
In an effort to remain completely independent, the creators of BuildtheHive have avoided seeking venture capital, and have been funding this project out of their own pockets. For a limited time, they will be accepting a very small number of editor’s who will not have to go through the “voting process” to be accepted, in return for a small donation of only $19.
For a chance to be part of what could conceivably become the “buzz word” in human-edited search, take it from me…it’s a bargain. If the creators of BuildtheHive only accomplish half of what they set out to do, it will turn the world of human-edited search on it’s ear!

Your website’s ranking on search engines is a vital element of your overall marketing campaign, and there are ways to improve your link popularity through legitimate methods. Unfortunately, the Internet is populated by bands of dishonest webmasters seeking to improve their link popularity by faking out search engines.
The good news is that search engines have figured this out, and are now on guard for “spam” pages and sites that have increased their rankings by artificial methods. When a search engines tracks down such a site, that site is demoted in ranking or completely removed from the search engine’s index.
The bad news is that some high quality, completely above-board sites are being mistaken for these web page criminals. Your page may be in danger of being caught up in the “spam” net and tossed from a search engine’s index, even though you have done nothing to deserve such harsh treatment. But there are things you can do - and things you should be sure NOT to do - which will prevent this kind of misperception.
Link popularity is mostly based on the quality of sites you are linked to. Google pioneered this criteria for assigning website ranking, and virtually all search engines on the Internet now use it. There are legitimate ways to go about increasing your link popularity, but at the same time, you must be scrupulously careful about which sites you choose to link to. Google frequently imposes penalties on sites that have linked to other sites solely for the purpose of artificially boosting their link popularity. They have actually labeled these links “bad neighborhoods.”
You can raise a toast to the fact that you cannot be penalized when a bad neighborhood links to your site; penalty happens only when you are the one sending out the link to a bad neighborhood. But you must check, and double-check, all the links that are active on your links page to make sure you haven’t linked to a bad neighborhood.
The first thing to check out is whether or not the pages you have linked to have been penalized. The most direct way to do this is to download the Google toolbar at http://toolbar.google.com. You will then see that most pages are given a “Pagerank” which is represented by a sliding green scale on the Google toolbar.
Do not link to any site that shows no green at all on the scale. This is especially important when the scale is completely gray. It is more than likely that these pages have been penalized. If you are linked to these pages, you may catch their penalty, and like the flu, it may be difficult to recover from the infection.
There is no need to be afraid of linking to sites whose scale shows only a tiny sliver of green on their scale. These sites have not been penalized, and their links may grow in value and popularity. However, do make sure that you closely monitor these kind of links to ascertain that at some point they do not sustain a penalty once you have linked up to them from your links page.
Another evil trick that illicit webmasters use to artificially boost their link popularity is the use of hidden text. Search engines usually use the words on web pages as a factor in forming their rankings, which means that if the text on your page contains your keywords, you have more of an opportunity to increase your search engine ranking than a page that does not contain text inclusive of keywords.
Some webmasters have gotten around this formula by hiding their keywords in such a way so that they are invisible to any visitors to their site. For example, they have used the keywords but made them the same color as the background color of the page, such as a plethora of white keywords on a white background. You cannot see these words with the human eye - but the eye of search engine spider can spot them easily! A spider is the program search engines use to index web pages, and when it sees these invisible words, it goes back and boosts that page’s link ranking.
Webmasters may be brilliant and sometimes devious, but search engines have figured these tricks out. As soon as a search engine perceive the use of hidden text - splat! the page is penalized.
The downside of this is that sometimes the spider is a bit overzealous and will penalize a page by mistake. For example, if the background color of your page is gray, and you have placed gray text inside a black box, the spider will only take note of the gray text and assume you are employing hidden text. To avoid any risk of false penalty, simply direct your webmaster not to assign the same color to text as the background color of the page - ever!
Another potential problem that can result in a penalty is called “keyword stuffing.” It is important to have your keywords appear in the text on your page, but sometimes you can go a little overboard in your enthusiasm to please those spiders. A search engine uses what is called “Keyphrase Density” to determine if a site is trying to artificially boost their ranking. This is the ratio of keywords to the rest of the words on the page. Search engines assign a limit to the number of times you can use a keyword before it decides you have overdone it and penalizes your site.
This ratio is quite high, so it is difficult to surpass without sounding as if you are stuttering - unless your keyword is part of your company name. If this is the case, it is easy for keyword density to soar. So, if your keyword is “renters insurance,” be sure you don’t use this phrase in every sentence. Carefully edit the text on your site so that the copy flows naturally and the keyword is not repeated incessantly. A good rule of thumb is your keyword should never appear in more than half the sentences on the page.
The final potential risk factor is known as “cloaking.” To those of you who are diligent Trekkies, this concept should be easy to understand. For the rest of you?cloaking is when the server directs a visitor to one page and a search engine spider to a different page. The page the spider sees is “cloaked” because it is invisible to regular traffic, and deliberately set-up to raise the site’s search engine ranking. A cloaked page tries to feed the spider everything it needs to rocket that page’s ranking to the top of the list.
It is natural that search engines have responded to this act of deception with extreme enmity, imposing steep penalties on these sites. The problem on your end is that sometimes pages are cloaked for legitimate reasons, such as prevention against the theft of code, often referred to as “pagejacking.” This kind of shielding is unnecessary these days due to the use of “off page” elements, such as link popularity, that cannot be stolen.
To be on the safe side, be sure that your webmaster is aware that absolutely no cloaking is acceptable. Make sure the webmaster understands that cloaking of any kind will put your website at great risk.
Just as you must be diligent in increasing your link popularity and your ranking, you must be equally diligent to avoid being unfairly penalized. So be sure to monitor your site closely and avoid any appearance of artificially boosting your rankings.

Are you one of the many viewers of the number one Fox News Channel, which boasts to be the leader in network news? Your best source for fair and balanced coverage with many celebrity news commentators weaving the stories with flashy 5-7 segments of mankind’s greatest controversies of our time? Do you watch “The Factor” series and the “No Spin” zone where they spin everything but the cameras and cut off every guest mid sentence? Is there not a more entertaining shouting match on your television today?
Who can beat the show? Flashing lights and better graphics than the pre-presentation at most movie theatres and if it were a flash presentation on the Internet it surely would win awards. You gotta love the Fox News Channel for its biting commentary and sitcom style debates. But is that really news? That is to say does anyone really learn anything? No guest has ever left the show giving up all the pertinent information on any issue? Is that fair or balanced? Is it fair for all concerned? Is there a way we can keep the incredible entertainment value but still get some reality-based news without the skew?
With Bill, Greta, Neil, Hannity, Heraldo, Oliver and that ding dong guy Allen Colmes they have quite a line-up indeed. But is this more about show than news? Do you like the show, but need more substance? Some people don’t as it appeals to their reading level really. But others say, they would like more substance, less commercials, longer segments and less repeating of pre-taped chaos and controversy. What say you? Think on it.

To detect key logger spyware, you need to know what it is and how it works. Key logger is an invisible software program that identity thieves can use to track your online activity.
It is almost impossible to detect key logger on your computer and even if you’re careful you’ll never know if it is recording information such as bank account passwords and credit card numbers.
You won’t even see your machine slow down or see anything unusual. It just silently watches every keystroke you type in as if the identity thieves were standing over your shoulder.
At least on third of all online scams can now be traced to keylogging. If you type key logger into any Internet search engine you can find several perfectly legal ways to buy and install it.
Several businesses use key logger software to monitor employee activity and parents can use keylogging to check up on the web sites their children are visiting. But in the hands of a hacker wanting to steal your financial information, key loggers are extremely dangerous.
Attackers who use key logger spyware often sell the information to third parties who can funnel money out of bank accounts or charge up credit cards. Hackers who use keylogging to get into one computer at a company have the ability to steal vital information from the entire organization.
The best rule of thumb is to carefully monitor what you download on your computer and what sites you visit. The major sites of banks and retailers are usually relatively safe. But be aware of downloading free software from an unfamiliar site that could leave you vulnerable to a potential hacker.
Here are a few tips to protect you against keylogging:
* Never open spam e-mail. * Do not open e-mail attachments from someone you don’t know. * Do not click ok on pop-up windows without reading them first. * Use a firewall to help prevent any unauthorized computer activity. * Run a weekly, full system anti-virus computer scan.
Computer experts say the number of keylogging crimes is on the rise but there are ways to protect yourself . Detecting key logger spyware and destroying it can be done by installing spyware protection software.
Becoming aware of the different ways that you can avoid this from happening to you is the first step to protecting yourself.
